Around the traps in November/December
Peninsula Folk Club launched a CD this month and the contributing artists gave a preview of the CD at their monthly concert in Frankston. It's a good CD containing many original tracks and some traditional tunes. I recorded 'Wayfaring Stranger' on it with the assistance of Max Amos on mandolin, Dave Ashby on bass/backing vocals and Alan Buckley also on backing vocals. Dave was away for the launch, but graciously, Evan Webb stepped up to play bass on the night.
The last Fathers in the Chapel concert for the year, at St Johns Anglican Church Cranbourne, was a great evening. Local bush poet Ed Walker, delivered some fantastic gems that had us in stitches. Ed is an awarded bush poet and his yarns with distinctive Australian flavour should not be passed over. Jeannette Martin performed some wonderful songs and her voice was captivating on the night. Ian Castles, Chris Newman and many other superb artists performed that evening but the outstanding act for the night would have to be Ray Moore. Despite having serious health problems, Ray with some encouragement from Ian Castles, has begun sing again. So in a rare break from acoustic tradition, a backing track was used to support Ray's performance. Ray still sang extremely well despite his illness and difficulties in in playing the guitar. Ray received a standing ovation.
The Cranbourne and Regional Uniting Church had their concert and once more a great line-up of acts appeared demonstrating the local talent and support for community projects such as their 'Food Truck' which helps people in need. Acts were varied and included Phil Young with his acoustic originals and Aziza Alchemy who dazzled the audience with belling dancing. For more details, go to their website on: http://www.cranbournefolkuniting.org. 'Nancy and Friend' hosted a concert at Lexington Gardens, Springvale and 114 Westall Road, Springvale and I played a few numbers which were received very well.
December was met with a community day at a new estate in Melbourne's South-East called Sandhurst Estate, near Frankston North. It was a real family day and I supported my folk club (B.A.D. Folk) with some music. The December Newport RSL gig went very well with a good turnout and friendly fun atmosphere.
